2007 Winner Carol Fletcher (2nd from right)

The winner of the McCaw Lewis Chapman Art Award is Carol Fletcher, a Raglan artist. Carol has a Bachelor of Media Arts Degree from Wintec and has a background in mathematics. She enjoys working with rules and formulae for the application of layers of dye to paper and likes to explore the boundary between artistic and scientific practices.

The Waikato Society of Arts President, Brenda Sayers, says, “The awards are a pleasing example of local business support for arts and culture”.

Phil Harris, a partner with McCaw Lewis Chapman who assisted Kate Darrow in the final selection, says “the firm has an historical relationship with the art community in the Waikato and we are pleased to enhance our offices with original artworks by local artists”.

The winning piece, called ‘Shades of Grey” has been purchased by the Hamilton law firm for $5,000 and will be displayed in their London Street offices after the exhibition at the ArtsPost concludes on 28th May. The remaining 14 finalists’ work is now available for sale to the public.

McCaw Lewis Chapman is a well established and high profile Hamilton law firm that traces its origins back to the early 1900's. The firm moved to new purpose-built offices at the river end of London Street in December 2002.

McCaw Lewis Chapman has a historical relationship with the art community in the Waikato and wanted to enhance their new offices with original artworks by local artists.

McCaw Lewis Chapman agreed to be the major sponsor in conjunction with the Waikato Society of Arts for this annual Art Award, and the firm purchases the winning work for $5000.

Entry to this award is restricted to WSA members and artists living within the geographic area of the Waikato, King Country and Thames Valley phone book.
